The public health and safety organization NSF International, found many harmful microorganisms such as E.coli, salmonella, listeria and others on kitchen items that are often used for food preparation or storage.

These bacteria sicken about 48 million Americans a year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The mild infections can range from nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.

Serious cases can lead to hospitalization and major complications, such as kidney failures, miscarriages and death.

People, such as the elderly, pregnant women, children, and individuals with compromised immune systems, may be more seriously impacted. Annually, about 1 in 6 Americans get sick, 128.000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die of food borne diseases, according to the CDC.

According to the NSF, some of the areas with the most microorganisms that can make you sick include counter tops, appliance handles. blenders, can openers, spatulas and they should be cleaned after every use. Vegetable and meat compartments of the refrigerator should be cleaned on a monthly basis.

And worse, many of the frequently used household cleaners contain toxic ingredients that can be even more
dangerous than the bacteria they are formulated to kill.
